Wildflower Planting
Wildflower Planting
Single-Day Workshop
April 26, 2025
2:00 - 4:30 pm
Instructor: Melissa Hessney Masters of Tanglebloom Flower Farm
Whether you're aiming to reduce lawn care, attract pollinators, or create a vibrant, low-maintenance landscape, wildflowers offer an ideal solution and will transform your outdoor space into a beautiful, sustainable haven. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn everything you need to know to plan and implement your own wildflower planting, from small garden strips to large, meadow-scale projects.
Wildflowers are incredibly versatile and resilient. They thrive in poor, drought-prone soils, reducing the need for fertilizers and water, which makes them an excellent choice for areas where traditional landscaping is challenging. Additionally, wildflower plantings help support local biodiversity by providing food and habitat for pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, as well as songbirds and other wildlife. They also help improve soil health, prevent erosion, and reduce the size of water-hungry lawns.
This class will provide a balanced mix of lecture and hands-on planning time. Topics covered will include:
Features & Benefits: Learn why wildflowers are a perfect addition to your landscape, including their ecological and aesthetic benefits.
Identifying Goals: Whether you’re interested in attracting Monarch butterflies, supporting native pollinators, creating a peaceful meadow, or simply reducing lawn space, we’ll help you clarify your objectives.
Site Selection & Soil Preparation: Not all areas are created equal—learn how to evaluate your site and prepare the soil for successful wildflower planting.
Plant & Seed Selection: Understand which species of wildflowers will thrive in your area, and how to choose plants based on your goals, soil type, and environmental conditions.
Customizing & Sourcing: We’ll discuss how to customize your planting plan and where to find the best seeds.
Planting & Maintenance: Finally, you’ll gain practical tips on how to plant and maintain your wildflower garden, including seed sowing and caring for your space as it grows.
You’ll leave the class with a clear, personalized plan for your own wildflower garden, as well as the knowledge to make it thrive. Whether you’re working with a small patch or a larger meadow area, this workshop will inspire and equip you to embrace the beauty and benefits of wildflowers.
Please bring a few notes about your planting space including approximate size, sunlight (full sun is best but part-shade will work), orientation, and soil type (sandy, clay, rocky, wet, etc.). By the end of class, you’ll be ready to get started on your own wildflower planting project!
This class is open to students 16 years of age and older.
Skill Level: 2-5 (some basic gardening knowledge is helpful)
